Isle of Wight Singer – Jo Boswell

Supplier feature

So you’ve sorted your catering and are just waiting on final numbers (don’t forget these, they are important for your wedding caterers), you’ve chosen your wedding dress and suits, and many other parts of your day. There are too many to list (but we will soon!). Now you’re left wondering ‘What are our options for entertaining our guests?’. Well we are pleased to tell you that there are tons of entertainers and performers of many varieties available on the Isle of Wight, both traditional and alternative. That’s not saying that they’re all in our directory yet but we are working on them (in a non-frankenstein way).

There are different points in your day you will want to fill with music and singing or with magic, fire performances and falconry: arriving at your ceremony and during, leaving your ceremony….married!!, arriving at your reception venue, while drinking your reception tipple of choce, before your meal or inbetween courses and then late into the night…of course! You don’t need to have all of the above but you can look at it two ways. There may be times in the day when you are already imagining a performance or entertainer captivating your guests attention, or you’ve found THE band or singer who will be rocking your wedding and you need to find the best place to have them. Consider these elements of your day carefully as you want them to be meaningful to you and memorable for everyone. For the right reasons.

There are memorable traditional performances that always stick in the peoples minds when at weddings, even yours (it passes in a blur so this should leave a mark on your memory), and those are singers. Classical, pop, indie or rock – there will be a style of music you imagine will portray your personalities and the way you would like your day to be. Singing can be such a powerful moving option for a wedding day, as a professional singer and performer will have experience in a variety of  settings, have a great voice and have good stage presence you will find captivates you and your wedding guests. It most definitely surpasses any recording through an ipod or cd player (do we still use these?). We do advise asking for examples of their previous work or visiting them at another open gig which is a good excuse for a date night with the other half.

A professional classically trained singer available for your wedding on the Isle of Wight is Jo Boswell, who has been singing since the age of 9 and has a variety of accompaniament options for your wedding day: from harpists and guitarists to a full band. It’s great to have options so you can choose what suits you both.

We asked Jo a little more about herself and what she offers wedding couples getting married on the Isle of Wight.

When did you start singing and why?

I have always loved singing and was encouraged by my parents from a young age. I started singing with Linda Filby Borrett at 9 year's old and have never stopped

Why did you choose to base your business on the Isle of Wight?

The Island is my home and there is a great network here for small music groups. The island is a popular wedding destination so there are a lot of opportunities for work.

How has the wedding side of your professional singing career grown since you started?

From singing at many friends weddings in the early days it has become the main part of my singing career. It's a very rewarding part of performing and I enjoy the challenge of different musical requests depending on the wedding and the tastes of the couple.

Who are the team behind ‘Josephine Boswell' or is it just you?

I have an accompanist who plays for me at most events unless for some reason I use a backing track but I would always choose to sing with a real piano, organ, guitar etc

What are the main wedding services you offer couples?

Music for the church service, reception drinks or the day after. Ranging from classical to jazz, folk and songs from the musicals. I also sing in Cat Skelington, a gypsy jazz band who are great for reception drinks and dinner music.

Do you offer anything that a client might not know about and may be of interest?

The addition of other parts with my performance be it a harpist, classical guitar or violinist, depending on the request.

What is the future for your singing career, any new developments for the future?

I hope to put together an album soon and extend my work to the mainland.

What do you think differentiates you from other wedding singers and entertainers?

A musical addition to the church service/registry office really brings the magic to the moment and helps to make it as memorable as possible. The choice of music for this part of the wedding is a very personal thing and like to discuss the music at length with the couple to find something that really works for them.

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves! With so many additional options with Jo you really can tailor make the performance at your wedding to suit you both. Flexibility and options are all great for wedding planning couples liable to change their minds.
