When you’re drawing up your wedding budget, it’s not always easy to decide where to save on costs. Really, it’s a matter of prioritising, isn’t it? If the important thing for you is that you have every single member of your family there, then it might mean having a buffet instead of a three-course meal. As long as you’re surrounded by your loved ones having a good time what does that matter? But you might want to think more long term about where you cut costs.

At the time, it might seem like a good idea to have your Dad’s mate, Clive take charge of the wedding photography in exchange for a few drinks. But when the dress has gathered dust and the flowers and food are long gone, you’ll rely on those precious photographs to remind you of the good times.

I don’t know of any bride who has invested in a professional photographer for her wedding day and regretted it. You just need to have a flick round Pinterest to see what we mean – the quality of the wedding photography can make a world of difference, picking the right photographer for you gives you a real chance of capturing the atmosphere of your big day with total accuracy.

Of course, it’s not just about the quality of the photographs; would you really feel comfortable with Uncle Clive taking snaps of you getting ready in the morning?...didn’t think so. An experienced wedding photographer will be well practiced in making you feel at ease – you might even forget they are there!

Acting as a discrete narrator, your wedding photographer will be skilled at capturing each fleeting moment in order to piece together the story of your day. One such brilliant professional goes by the name of Abigail Steed. Abigail is an Isle of Wight based photographer who has taken some pretty striking weddings images – at times she’s even been so in tune with the couple she’s shed the odd tear. Her new website depicts different gallery like ‘rooms’ where you can find the information you need. We asked Abigail a little more about herself and the work she does. We hope this gives you a bit more insight into this fabulous photographer and whether she’s the one you’d like to invite to record your day.

When did Abigail Steed Photography start and why?

I started my business with the idea of offering an alternative to the traditional wedding photography options that are out there. I have always loved photography as a medium for telling stories and wedding photography shouldn't be any different. After photographing my own family extensively and especially my children as they have grown up, I realised that the emotion and memories that documentary photography can evoke are invaluable. Wedding Photography has had a pretty bad rep in the past, techniques and styles are changing for the better, I want to be a big part of that change.

Why did you decide to base your business on the Isle of Wight?

I was born on the Isle of Wight and I grew up here, it has such a natural beauty and I consider myself very lucky to live in such an amazing place and raise my children here. I can't envisage not living here so building a business here was just a natural conclusion.

How has Abigail Steed Photography grown since you started?

It's grown quite rapidly, I've been lucky enough to meet amazing couples that have put their faith in me and helped me to grow creatively. I've also had fantastic support from a network of other photographers and that has pushed me to constantly improve. I strive to be better every single time I take a photo, my couples, their stories, are my inspiration to be a better photographer.

Who are the team behind Abigail Steed Photography?

Just me!

What are the main wedding services you offer couples?

I offer full day coverage for peak season (May-September weddings) and reduced hours for out of season weddings. I realise that every couple is unique and will happily tailor make a package to suit them. I have image only options and also a gorgeous range of fine art albums.

Do you offer anything that a client might not know about and may be of interest?

For those couples that want amazing photos together but don't want to tie the knot I offer couples shoots, kind of like a mini engagement shoot. I totally appreciate that not everyone wants to get married but still might want some beautiful images to hang on to.

What’s next for Abigail Steed Photography, any new developments for the future?

I'm planning a trip to Iceland this year, it's going to be a real challenge in terms of pushing myself to create something special with limited time and in a fairly harsh environment. Also I just want to keep improving, travel more and meet more couples that allow me to tell their love stories in an honest and beautiful style.

What do you think differentiates you from other photographers?

I guess me! Just myself. Everything that happens to you as a person in your own life shapes how you see the world. I see the world through a camera and when I click the shutter it's because it makes me feel something. Everyone is completely unique, I'd hate to think that my photography would ever become generic or a one size fits all, being an alternative wedding photographer means I'm looking for the differences, I'm looking for the things that make you who you are and using those moments to tell a story that will resonate with my couples.

And the big one…Why the wedding industry?

It's probably because it's going to be one of the most important days of your life, there is always a narrative, a story of what led up to that one single day. That fascinates me and I want to capture it in the only way I know how.

Well we can relate to the ‘irresistible pull’ the Island has - it’s kept us coming back from as far as Gibraltar, and will keep you coming back once you are married here. Wherever life may take you. Looking back over Abigail’s images you can see how she tries to capture the emotion of the day - exactly what you want from a wedding photographer.
