Isle of Wight wedding cake and cupcakes

Prima Dana Cakes

Supplier feature

Here at Wight Wedding days we are wedding cake lovers and we most definitely wouldn’t want our wedding day to be happening without one. We will blog the ideal cake Marianne will be asking an Isle of Wight supplier to make for her wedding here – they’ll have a challenge. There are many wedding cake makers to choose from on the Isle of Wight, and with a trend of having something a little alternative or different and unique, they seem to be rising to the challenge of providing the variety you all automatically expect from mainland businesses. From cupcakes and any flavour sponges to ornately decorated masterpieces, cheesecakes and cheese wheel wedding cakes. Ok – so a cake maker isn’t about to start baking you a cheese wheel wedding cake but the possibilities are pretty endless and there are high quality wedding cake makers available on the Isle of Wight.

The size, shape, flavour and type of wedding cake can be a hard decision to make, not sure about you but our eyes are bigger than our bellies! Your cake maker will be able to give you a guide as to the size of cake that would be appropriate for the number of wedding guests you will have. It is traditionally served in the evening or at the end of the meal as a dessert, or brought out later in the evening when feeling peckish sets in, so don’t forget to include those hungry evening guests that might be arriving.

Your wedding cake can cut then boxed and given as a favour for your guests, which can save you money by combining the two. Guests are sure to be hungry the next day and it can be eaten with a cup of coffee to ease the headache that is setting in from the evening before. Sometimes people just can’t resist and may tuck into the wedding cake there and then, but there’s no harm in that so long as the lovely cake you have paid for is enjoyed by everyone. Be sure to ask your venue or caterers to put the top tier to one side if you want it to be kept. It can quickly be chopped up and handed out to guests.

When choosing a flavour you have quite a few options. It could be easy to choose if you have allergies, intolerances or a major dislike to a particular flavour. You will find most wedding cake makers on the Isle of Wight can accommodate dietary requirements and flavour afflictions and would be happy to create a unique and bespoke cake for your needs. You can choose to please yourselves with the flavours and type of cake you both adore or you can choose something that will be eaten by most of your guests (there is only so much cake you can eat if it is a completely obscure flavour). There again you can have multiple tiers of different flavours and then no one has an excuse not to eat cake.

Choosing an Isle of Wight wedding cake maker when you are planning a wedding here has massive benefits as you can meet and discuss exactly what it is you want and what the possibilities are. Some may think that is a lot of effort to go to when it’s just a cake – well wash your mouth out! Cake is important and it is another extension of your wedding theme that will be photographed all day with the newly wed couple standing alongside. So it’s important the cake is of a high standard, ties in with the wedding theme, and is how you imagined it would be.

An Isle of Wight cake maker who is listed on the Wight Wedding Days directory who offers a bespoke and unique wedding cake service is Prima Dana Cakes run by Dana. We spoke to Dana about her wedding cake business and why she got started in such a high-pressure industry. Her answers really express her passion for what she does and it is refreshing to hear that attention to customer service experience is high on Dana’s list of essentials!

When did you start Prima Dana Cakes and why?

Prima Dana Cakes was officially started as a full-time business in February 2012. (I made cakes on a part-time business the previous year). My mother was celebrating her 75th birthday 2 years ago with what was to be a lavish affair with many friends and family members expected from the mainland. I obtained a couple of quotes from celebration cake makers which, like so many members of the public, I felt (mistakenly) were excessive. I decided to make it myself. The cake was a phenomenal success, better than any of the photos we'd seen depicting a similar mouse theme (my mother's nickname had been "little mouse"). However, I spent more than we'd been quoted. I was surprised to learn that to make and decorate a cake was surprisingly costly in both equipment and labour but I also discovered that I had a talent, and more importantly that I loved doing it. PDC was started because I love the medium of cakes as an artistic expression.

Why did you decide to base your business on the Isle of Wight and what are the benefits?

The Isle of Wight as a business location was an easy decision as I already lived here and appreciated the incredible beauty of the island as an abundant source of inspiration. Benefits for me are that I can work from home with all the flexibility that offers, the beautiful peaceful surroundings and the friendliness of the islanders. Benefits for the customers are that I offer a bespoke service where customer satisfaction is of paramount importance. I also offer evening and weekend consultations at the client's home or mine....whichever is more convenient for the client.

How has Prima Dana Cakes grown since you started?

I have been pleased with the increase in number of enquiries and the positive feedback from many satisfied customers.

Who are the team behind Prima Dana Cakes?

Myself - Dana Stary with family support.

What are the main wedding products you create for couples?

I create wedding cakes that are tiered, stacked, topsy-turvey, 3-D models. Iced or chocolate. Cup cakes, and cup cake towers. Decorated with sugar flowers, sugar models, sugarpaste shapes, intricate piping or hand painted designs. I also do celebration cakes.

Do you offer anything that a wedding client might not know about and may be of interest?

I like challenges... whether the challenge of piping intricate designs, of painting beautiful flower designs freehand, or of producing 3-D cakes. So I offer a bespoke service where the client's wishes are respected and every request is taken seriously. Offering 3-D cakes for themed weddings, for example - a motorbike, horse, building, ship etc., and beautiful hand painted floral wedding cakes. There are a large variety of delicious flavours available to you, and I continue to expand the range. Also, if the wedding couple have a particular flavour in mind we will work on developing it in cake format. Alternatively if they want to incorporate "Granny's secret recipe" then I'm happy to oblige, confidentiality is assured. This is a BESPOKE service.

What is the future for Prima Dana Cakes, any new developments?

Immediate future - to reach a wider audience. To continue to grow in size and reputation. Long term - to expand in size and product range and become one of the most prestigious and known cake designers from the south of England.

What do you think differentiates you from other wedding cake makers?

I'm willing to go the extra mile to ensure the bride and groom get what they want. No matter how improbable the idea may seem I'll try to produce a fabulous creation from even the most unusual request.

We think it is great that Dana sees cakes as a form of artistic expression, as your wedding day will be an expression of you both and your personalities. It is good to keep in mind that unique bespoke made cakes by professionals will cost you more than a supermarket bought sponge but they will be created to reflect your tastes, wedding theme and personalities. Pictures taken of a handmade cake will be all the better to look at in future and will differentiate your wedding from so many others. You can see in the images above that Dana can cater for a wide variety of styles and types of wedding cakes.

If you would like to see more of Dana’s work and get in touch for a quote or to arrange a consultation go to the Prima Dana profile page in the Wight Wedding Days Directory and use the enquiry form.
