Here at Wight Wedding Days, we love nothing more than great design and attention to detail. Sometimes the little things can make a big impression, especially when it comes to planning weddings. This is why any time we hear someone say ‘I’m not that bothered about the invitations or stationery’ it makes us die a little inside.

Some people think that sending invitations is purely a means of sharing vital information about the wedding day. Once the guest has received it, read it and sent off their RSVP, the invitation can be disposed off or recycled. This may be the reason why some engaged couples don’t want to commit too much time, money or effort to producing their wedding stationery. But it is so much more than that! Create something too special to throw away and your guests may well want to find a use for it!

To the majority of your guests, receiving the save the date card and invitation pack means gaining initial insight into the tone and theme of your wedding. If your guests are of a certain age they may well receive a number of wedding invitations each year. In some instances they are not able to make them all and will need to choose which ones to attend – and you never know what influence your invitation will have! When you’re going to so much trouble to plan the wedding of the year it makes sense to advertise it properly. Sending out a bespoke save the date card is the perfect way of distributing a taster of what’s in store for your guests. By developing a design that merges both your personalities, you’ll be able to forge a brand for your marriage.

Now, all your really good friends won’t need any persuasion at all, but why miss out an opportunity to surprise them with something truly spectacular and original.  How good is it when you rifle through your bank statements and bills and find something colourful and exciting in the post? Usually, the style of the invitation sets the style of the wedding – it might even give people a sense of how they should style themselves when the day comes.

There are plenty of ways to make your stationery stand out and create a complimentary set that will really give a sense of your identity as a couple. It needn’t stop at the invitations and RSVPs, if you’ve come up with an original design, why not reinforce the theme through items such as table plans, menu’s name cards? In order to really set your day apart, any opportunity to exercise good attention to detail should exploited.

Sadly, not all of us are lucky enough to be blessed with creative talent, but luckily there is someone on the Island who can help. The very lovely Nicky Marinelli is a trained Graphic Designer who started working with wedding stationery after designing her own. The work produced by Nicky through her business, Marinelli Designs, provides perfect examples of originality in wedding stationery. We asked a few questions about Marinelli Designs and her stunning work.

When did Marinelli Designs start and why?

I previously worked as a graphic designer before taking a break to have my 2 children. About 3 years ago when it was time to return to work, I wanted a career that would be more flexible and a home based business seemed like the logical solution.

I had already worked on a number of weddings, first designing my own stationery, then my sisters and then numerous friends. Starting a business in the wedding industry seemed an obvious choice, as I knew I would enjoy it.

Why did you decide to base your business on the Isle of Wight?

My family all live on the Island and I love it here. Although I am based here, I am able to work with couples all over the country and most of my work is actually ordered through Internet and posted out to customers. I do prefer working with Island couples however, as I usually get the chance to meet them initially to chat about their requirements which is much more enjoyable.

How has Marinelli Designs grown since you started?

When I first started the business, I worked part-time and only worked on a couple of weddings a month. I now work full time on the business, often working weekends and evenings too during the spring/ summer season as the business has grown.

Who are the team behind Marinelli Designs?

It’s just me; although I do get a lot of support from other Island wedding businesses that all help each other out which I really appreciate.

What are the main wedding services you offer couples?

Initially, I work with couples ready to send out their Save the Dates/Invitations and then nearer the wedding date they often come back to me to work on their Orders of Service and reception stationery. Some people only order one or two items and others like to order the whole collection so that everything throughout the day co-ordinates.

Do you offer anything that a client might not know about and may be of interest?

As I am trained in graphic design I am able to create any item a couple may want for their wedding, from sweet buffet signage to wine bottle labels. I am also more than happy to work with them to create a completely new design if they have particular ideas for their invitations.

What is the future for Marinelli Designs, any new developments for the future?

Each year I try and create a new collection of designs and I am currently busily designing for 2013.

What do you think differentiates you from other wedding stationers?

I try to make sure my designs are original and something a bit different to the styles of other stationers. I also pride myself on the personal service that I offer each couple, ensuring that their stationery is perfect for them in every way.

And the big one…Why the wedding industry?

I really love designing for weddings; the couples I work with are so appreciative of the time I put in to their stationery and are always so full of praise when they receive their order!
