Isle of Wight hairdressers – wedding hair styling

Your wedding day is like being the two main characters in your own show; all eyes will be on you. We know that can add pressure to look your best but you must remember that most of the people attending your wedding have probably seen you with no make up on, in your pyjamas and perhaps even after a night out. You are going to look amazing on your wedding day even if you put a lick of mascara on and run a brush through your hair. The reality is that you will be looking to have a little more oomph than that, and you will be considering hiring a professional to offer a helping hand or four. Next to your wedding make up you will find that a hairdresser will be the next supplier you are looking at choosing wisely.

It can be difficult settling on the right hairdresser throughout the year. Someone who listens to what you ask for and then does it, hears you when you say ‘just take an inch off’ and only takes an inch and who doesn’t force their own ideas of how they think your hair should be onto you. We are guilty of smiling and saying thank you when we aren’t entirely happy, but when you find that golden hairdresser you hold on tight. Some of us can be quite particular about how our hair looks and leaving the house without being happy with it is out of the question. On the other hand (and this is where we both sit), if our hair is half presentable then we are pretty relaxed and happy to leave the house without hair of the year. However, when it comes to wedding day hair it is a different kettle of fish for both types of person and your hair not being right would be the worst possible scenario.

On the Isle of Wight you will find a variety of options for your wedding hair styling and will firstly probably look to your current hairdresser for advice as they know your hair type, what it likes doing for you and what you are comfortable with. On a daily basis and for your regular hair colour and cut this is fine, but more often than not you will find your hairdresser isn’t trained specifically in wedding hair styling and aren’t up to date on current trends. How your hair is going to look on your wedding day is pretty important so you will want the best you can buy that achieves the look you are imagining. This is going to be a pretty essential part of your day that is going to be photographed….just a few hundred times. You don’t really want a strand out of place, unless that’s the look you are going for.

Don’t be put off by your preconceptions of what your hair type is and what it will and won’t do. Learning to style your own hair is pretty hard and we find we go a little like we have two left hands when trying to blow dry our own hair nicely. The brush usually gets stuck then tugged out at some point. A professional wedding hairdresser will be able to manipulate your mane in a way you never knew was possible and can often tame most hair types into the position you want. We’re not saying expect Cheryl Cole locks with the swoosh of a bit of hairspray, we imagine her hair costs a lot to maintain, but it isn’t until you take the time to talk over your wedding hair ideas and styling troubles that a professionally trained wedding hair specialist can advise on the best possible way of achieving the style you want. A consultation with a wedding hair stylist is the best route to figuring this out, can be fun and whether your theme is vintage, modern, country chic, festival times or seaside fun there will be a number of styles that can be tried and tested until you reach the one that suits you and your wedding day. You may opt for hair extensions to get the thick voluminous hair you’ve always dreamed off. It can be a chance to really try out the things you haven’t before for a regular ol’ Saturday night out in an Isle of Wight bar. Have fun and create a look that you are comfortable with but is everything you dreamed of.

Where you have your hair done on the morning of the wedding is another decision to make. Do you stay at home with all your comforts around you? or do you opt to take everything wedding to the venue or hotel room that offers a great backdrop for the wedding photos? You may even be looking to an Isle of Wight spa or salon where you can spend the morning getting ready. One Isle of Wight hairdresser who offers a mobile service and can bring a professional wedding service to your home or venue is Donna Jones Hairdressing. Not only does Donna offer the regular year round services like cut, colour and special occasion styling but specific wedding training, vintage styles and experience are her forte. We asked Donna to tell us more about how she got started and what the future of Donna Jones Hairdressing may bring.

When did you start your mobile hairdressing services and why?

I started my mobile hairdressing business in July 2012. I started my career in 1998 and up until I had my daughter in 2011 had always worked in salons. I love being a mum and wanted to spend more time with my daughter so I decided to start my own mobile hairdressing business to fit around her.

Why did you decide to base your business on the Isle of Wight and what are the benefits?

I have always lived on the IOW. It’s beautiful, friendly and a great place to live. The island has so much to offer couples for their weddings.

Since you set up as Donna Jones Hairdressing how has your business grown?

So far my first year has been amazing! I started my business by leaflet dropping to advertise and doing a few of my friends and families hair at home.  One of my friends was getting married and asked me to do their wedding hair. I loved the whole experience and that’s when I decided I wanted to work in the wedding industry. I now have a website, worked with lots of lovely brides, photo shoots and have recently completed a vintage hairstyling for the camera course.  Word of mouth on the island really has helped me to get my name out there and build a good reputation. I never thought I would be this busy so quickly and feel really proud that in a few months my client base has dramatically grown.

Who are the team behind Donna Jones Hairdressing?

Just me and of course my lovely husband who I couldn’t do all of this without!

What are the main wedding services you offer for brides and other female members of the wedding party?

I offer a flexible island wide professional mobile wedding hair service for brides and their wedding party at their home or chosen venue. Having your hairdresser come to you can save you time and make your day a truly relaxing experience. I love working with brides and find being part of their big day is a huge privilege.

On the wedding morning I am with the bride right until they are ready to walk down the aisle, making sure all finishing touches are applied and have even been known to help with dressing the bride and her party.  I also work alongside makeup artist Ruth from Harmony Beauty so together we can offer you and your wedding party a bespoke wedding hair and makeup package.

Do you offer anything that a wedding client might not know about and may be of interest?

Being qualified in all aspects of hairdressing and years of experience means I can offer advice, treatments and the right products to get the bride, and not forgetting grooms hair, looking amazing for the big day. I work with my clients to help get their hair in healthy condition, cut or grow it to the appropriate length if needed and can create or maintain their hair colour.

Another service I offer is that I can be hired for the whole wedding day to help with any hair touch ups for the photos, and any hair changes in the evening.

What is the future for Donna Jones Hairdressing, any new developments?

I’m really excited about the future! If 2012 is anything to go by 2013 is going to be amazing! I have got lots of weddings booked, upcoming photo shoots and new projects in the pipeline. I will continue to work hard to build my reputation and keep up to date with the latest trends and techniques. Watch this space!

What do you think differentiates you from other wedding hair stylists and hairdressers?

I feel my years of working in salons and experience in the hair industry have given me the skills to be a professional wedding hair expert. I strive to be creative, knowledgeable and personable.  I keep up with the trends in bridal hair and how to interpret them as I want all my brides to have wedding day hair they have always dreamed of.  My extensive hairdressing knowledge means I can recommend wedding hair dos that complement the brides face and work with all different hair lengths and textures. I only use top professional products that have longevity to see your style through the whole day.  Whether my brides choose up, down, trendy or casual, I can help them achieve a hairstyle that completes their total look.

We absolutely adore the images from Emma Watts Photography of Tom and Laura's wedding day just above here. It epitomises the emotion and feeling the morning of a wedding. How amazing that Donna contributed to that.
