Finding your bridesmaid her dress

Wight Photography

You want to look amazing and feel great in your wedding dress and we would suggest making sure your bridesmaids make a similar statement on the day and compliment you perfectly.

Bridesmaids come in different shapes and sizes and so do their dresses (or suits if you are choosing a close male friend – needs a separate blog post we thinks). It can be nerve racking knowing that their outfit is in your hands, so be considerate of their confidence on the day and pick wisely. Think of what they normally like wearing out and what parts of themselves they are happy to expose or even which parts of a dress they will let hug them more snuggly. Just because it is your wedding day and they will most definitely feel privileged to be escorting you down the aisle, doesn’t mean they are willing to wear something they would never consider on any normal day.

On that note though – like the bride, a bridesmaid can try to stay in their comfort zone without realising that they would look nice in something they have never tried before. So get them to at east try something different on but be respectful of their feelings or if they are uncomfortable on your wedding day they may not enjoy themselves as much.

If you have a colour in mind or you have bought coloured items for your day already, take them with you so you pick a colour close to the one you are planning. Advisable if perfect colour co-ordination on your wedding day is important to you. Consider varying styles of dress in the same colour or tone that compliments your dress, groomswear and theme. Or throw all of that to the wind and choose colour clash as your theme?

Many bridalwear shops on the Island can get dresses made in the style, fabric and colour of your choice. There is a lot of flexibility to this option as they can be adjusted to each bridesmaid and can be slightly altered in style a lot of the time. The perfect fit will induce the perfect smile in your wedding day pictures.

Alternatively you could choose a dress off the high street or internet. You will find they come at good prices or in an on trend style (always good to look back on with the grandchildren when you have to point out that EVERYONE was wearing those peplum dresses back then). A friendly warning though – there won’t be much room for adjustment with high street dresses if you have bridesmaids of varying heights, sizes and shapes. They are your bridesmaids because they are friends & family but you may be lucky and a bag a bargain so why not take a look.

Different heights usually mean different length bodies and legs so consider that when choosing where you will get your dress (high street doesn’t allow much adjustment) and what length it will be. We would advise not choosing a top of the thigh dress as that length would definitely create opportunity for other guests to see more than they bargained for. There will be getting out of cars, picking up your train, directing flower girls and pageboys around (height difference creates a problem), up and down stairs and plenty of dancing.

Other reasons that may determine the length of the dress will be the theme – carnival, festival, seaside, formal, vintage 50’s or vintage 70’s will all have typical styles to go with, and body shape – the length of a dress can sometimes accentuate a particular body shape for better or worse depending on their opinion, and style – certain lengths really make a certain style of dress and are a safe bet.

Don’t forget the hair either. Have you planned for your bridesmaids to have their hair up, down or even to one side? It would be a shame to cover up the decorative shoulders of a dress or the embellished top to a strapless dress. Hair up completely may even allow you to choose a high neck style dress.  Just something to think about ahead of spending a day or 3 shopping and looking for dresses.

Once you have bought your wedding dress you can determine exactly what you should be looking for in a bridesmaid dress and what will compliment you on the day as well as make your friends & family look great too. If you haven’t decided on your bridesmaids yet then we would suggest making a final decision so they can help you with all your other planning. If you need a little help we have a post called who's who at your wedding to help you choose your wedding party, if you want a little guidance.

Happy dress shopping
