Decorating your wedding venue with your theme

Isle of Wight wedding hire and venue dressing

Finishing Touches

When you take the Christmas decorations down in *ahem* mid Jan do you ever feel like the room looks a little bit bare with more of an echo than in November? We do, and that’s because all those decorations make the room have atmosphere and make those sitting amongst the colours, twinkly lights and presents feel like it is Christmas. And guess what!... it’s just the same with a wedding except there are less traditions in how you can decorate your venue and there are tons of options available to you. Not an easy decision we know. Worry not as we’ll have a go at helping you out and suggesting a pro who can do better even we can!

Many venues can help you by describing how it ‘could’ look on your wedding day, whereas others can actually ‘show’ you with a room laid up for someone else’s wedding. Let’s face it we all want a little bit of guidance, reassurance we are making the right decisions, and to put our own touch on the way the room or rooms will look to you and your guests. No one wants the wedding that happened at the venue last Saturday….. So we suggest some of the following:

Really decide on a theme once you have chosen a venue or choose your venue around a solid theme you have chosen beforehand. We understand that not everyone has the flexibility in their budget to be so picky, so if the choice of venue is restricted then we would suggest doing your research.

Think about the colours already in the venue – can you work a theme you are happy with around them. Try to avoid clashing with the décor as this will be the background to most of your wedding pictures.

Look through blogs, Pinterest and Isle of Wight wedding suppliers images on websites, Facebook profiles and Twitter feeds. Collect images and decide on colours, themes and items you want to make, hire or buy for your wedding day.

What can the venue supply and do for you? Lighting, changes of chairs, crockery and movable decorative pieces. Can they make changes for you and do they have anything in stock.

What does your budget stretch to when taking into consideration all the other payments that will need to be made? We aren’t saying that it isn’t essential to do some venue dressing (Christmas isn’t Christmas without a tree and some tinsel!), even if it is just flowers and place names you will be glad on the day you spent on making the room have some ‘wow’

Ask a professional – sounds costly and like you might lose control, but speaking to a professional who has probably dressed that venue before in many different ways can advise you. Go to them with a clear but flexible idea of what you would like your wedding day to look like and consider all options they suggest. Don’t let yourself be sold on things you know you can’t afford, but sometimes someone who dresses wedding venues for a living has the perfect suggestion for you.

One such Isle of Wight wedding supplier is Mandi Moore of Finishing Touches based in Ryde. With a shop full of beautiful, delicate and the more bulky items that will really interpret your day, it is almost completely irresistible to walk in for a snoop around. Stationery, sashes in too many colours to name, centrepieces, letterboxes, table plans, candelabra and much much more. You’ll be lost in there like a Mary Poppins bag. We spoke to Mandi and asked her a little more about the pretty and exciting business she is running.

Hello Mandi. Congratulations on your purchase of Finishing Touches. Although it’s you and your hubby, a duo. That’s one great anniversary present! You have been involved with Finishing Touches for a long time through your stationery business but what was the attraction of being able to take Finishing Touches on full-time?

As a Wedding stationer I have enjoyed creating bespoke stationary for couples on their special day.  I have often dealt with the bride and groom for nearly a year before their actual wedding day; getting to know them and to see the progression from an initial discussion of what they require, to the final product especially made for them is wonderful.

Having attended set-ups with the previous owners of Finishing Touches, when I was offered the chance to take on more of the details that really make a wedding truly personal I was so excited to be even more involved in what is one of the biggest days in someone’s life!

Why did you choose to live and work on the Isle of Wight in the first place?

Having enjoyed many holidays as a child on the Island when my parents retired over here and asked Steve and I to join them, we said yes!

How has Finishing Touches grown over the years and why?

Obviously having just recently taken on the business I can only really speak for our progression so far.  As well as continuing to provide a diverse range of table centre packages, chair covers and sashes and other unique items to hire for your event, we are keen to create bespoke styling that really is totally personal to our customers. Just because we don’t already have what you might be after doesn’t mean that we can’t help you, we are willing to develop packages and decoration that totally complete your unique concept or theme.

We are constantly looking to see what themes and items are on trend experimenting with these new ideas we are keen to always have something bang on trend and up to date to offer.

In the future we hope to also increase our retail section within the business by providing a range of guest books, frames and lovely wedding boxes to treasure all the mementoes from your big day.

Who are the new team and what do they do?

As you already know I am the new owner of Finishing Touches! My husband Steve takes on the less creative side of the business making sure the books balance, keeps our accounts in good order and stops Clare and I from spending too much!

Clare is my shop manager, having graduated from art and design at university, and having worked for the previous owners of Finishing Touches, we work together to source and create all the lovely things you see in the shop. Both Clare and I take appointments, using our knowledge and skills from our varied backgrounds to help plan and get things just right for our customers and brides to be!

And then of course we all work together when it comes to actually dressing the events! During the summer months where we may have multiple weddings on one weekend we need all the hands that we have!

Do you offer anything that a couple might not already know about?

We are constantly acquiring lovely new items for hire, too many to promote all at once! Our most prized new possessions, to name our top three would be firstly our twinkly starlight arch; great for a stunning entrance to your venue or a sparkling canopy to stand under for your ceremony.

Secondly our vintage table crowns, we have not yet seen them anywhere else and we are so excited for their first outing, in both vintage ivory and antique gold they really do add quite a royal touch!

Finally there is our beautiful ornate easel, what better to display your bespoke table plan on than our lovely easel, it really is the finishing touch!

And of course we have our ever increasing collection of chair sashes in lots of luscious colours and if organza isn’t your thing then we have some great new cotton sashes including nautical stripes and pink gingham for that ever popular country look!

What differentiates you from other venue dressing and wedding hire businesses on the Isle of Wight?

Like all the other business in our field, we want our customers to feel that they are getting a professional service, totally unique to them, no request is too much. We respect that they put absolute trust in us to make their day beautiful. All of this we try to provide at a reasonable price.

What is most important to you when helping a couple dress their venue for their wedding day on the Isle of Wight?

For us the devil really is in the detail. We take into account the interiors of all the lovely venues we have here on the island and endeavour to advise our couples as to the best colours and layouts we believe will make their receptions and ceremonies shine. We go to great lengths to achieve a perfect colour match; from bespoke stationary to chair sashes and table runners right down to the correct hue for our scatter petals and crystals everything has to be spot on.

Knowing that someone will go to great lengths to find the items you need while advising on the best way for your chosen venue, is a weight off of many of your minds. We can all be confident with our choices but I’m sure we all like the reassurance of a professional point of view.

If you would like to talk more to Mandi on what the Finishing Touches team can offer your wedding day just get in touch and she will be happy to speak to you or meet in their lovely shop.
