Accommodation for your wedding guests on the Isle of Wight – OSGH

Isle of Wight Accommodation

Old Shanklin Guest House

Part of the reason couples come to the Isle of Wight to get married is the chance for some of their guests to come over and enjoy a relaxing stay here. Beaches, green fields and lots and lots to do, you can’t blame them really. It’s for many of those reasons that couples choose to plan their weddings on the Isle of Wight in the first place. So, if your guests are coming here then you want EVERYTHING to be just perfect and a massive element of that stay is where they will lay their tired body after a night of dancing, drinking and celebrating your marriage. We hope to provide a great list of accommodation options for your guests in the directory, and hey even you need somewhere to retreat at the end of your reception.

One such option is the Old Shanklin Guest House in….well, Shanklin for those of you who don’t realise that it’s a lovely town on the south coast of  the Isle of Wight. A guest house is often a great choice for a wedding stay as you may get a more personalised and friendly stay than with a larger hotel. We could try and tell you why you might want to choose the Old Shanklin Guest House (OSGH – Love this abbreviation and it is so cute they use Mr and Mrs OSGH. Give it time and you’ll have your own abbreviation!), however, we thought we would go straight to them and ask them all a out why they do what they do, and what they can offer for you and your wedding guests.

When did Old Shanklin Guest House start and why?

OSGH opened in September 2011 after 3 months refurbishment and about a year in the planning.

Why did you decide to base your business on the Isle of Wight?

It has always been Mrs OSGH’ dream to live on the Isle of Wight ever since she can remember and really wanted everyone to know why she loves it so much. The only way to do this was to advertise it herself!

Over the years the island has discreetly changed. Food and drink is a huge focus in the way it is farmed, produced, cooked and eaten on the Island. So when a change of lifestyle was discussed to escape the stresses of London life the Island was the obvious choice. We are able to buy the majority of the food from Island sources and use other local products, such as the soaps in the room and art work.

How has Old Shanklin Guest House grown since you started?

When OSGH first had it’s Visit England assessment a month after opening we were awarded 4* Gold, the Breakfast award and Walkers Welcome accolade, since then we have been upgraded to 5 Star with the Breakfast award and are recommended by Britain’s Finest B&Bs.

Many of our guests are already returning for their 3rd and 4th time, so our breakfast specials have been expanded offering dishes from all round the world as well as the traditional and locally sourced Full English.

The guest house is constantly evolving as we learn more about our guests needs and more about what is available on the Island.

Who are the team behind Old Shanklin Guest House?

Husband and wife Gareth and Sarah have been together for almost 20 years. Sarah studied at hospitality and catering college before working in London hotels. Gareth on the other hand worked in Graphic Design in Soho.

We were lucky enough to be able to spend a year travelling around the world tasting some wonderful food and wine and experiencing some amazing cultures.

What are the main wedding services you offer couples?

At OSGH we offer accommodation for bride & groom, wedding guests and family. Over the past year we have had numerous honeymooners, wedding guests, proposals (always yes!) and anniversary celebrations.

Do you offer anything that a client might not know about and may be of interest?

We can arrange flowers and chocolates for the room. Early check in is available with prior notice.

We also have free WiFi for those guests who just can’t drag themselves away from the office!

Our rooms are well equipped to enable guests to get ready in comfort. Each room has it’s own hairdryer, iron and ironing board. Early breakfast is also available should an early celebration be ahead.

What is the future for Old Shanklin Guest House, any new developments for the future?

Because we love to travel we are always getting new ideas to ensure our guests’ comfort and satisfaction. The house is closed for refurbishment every year to make sure we deserve those 5 stars and keep everything fresh.

What do you think differentiates you from other accommodation and guest houses on the Isle of Wight?

Our guest house is modern and up to date, whilst being comfortable and stylish. The rooms are very spacious – no en suites as an afterthought.

Breakfast can be a different experience every day. Our specials change daily from Waffles to Eggs Benedict to Hot Cakes as well as a choice of Full English breakfast.

Well after a night at a wedding or a day out seeing the sights of the Isle of Wight, those breakfast options sound delicious! We like the idea that the accommodation would be as memorable experience as the wedding might be, with great customer service! Ok we won’t compare the accommodation to your wedding, but it all counts.
